Forbes Galleries
Forbes Magazine Building
The Forbes Magazine Galleries, housed in an historic early 20th century building on 5th Avenue, in NYC, required the conversion of modern office space into gallery rooms to house an extensive archive of Presidential autographs and manuscripts, as well as a large collection of 19th century paintings. The new rooms reflect the character of the original building designed in 1925 by Carrere and Hastings/Shreeve and Lamb Architects.
The Picture Gallery, the largest of the new rooms, is used to display the large collection of 19th century paintings collected by Christopher Forbes. The room is often used for dinners and receptions. It is modeled on the West Gallery at the Frick Museum, also designed by Carrere and Hastings. The walls are covered in a deep green silk moire fabric. Doorways are framed in American Black Cherry, topped with a marble over-door, and surrounded by a bracketed cornice. A modified Ionic entablature that conceals the lighting joins the walls with the plaster cove ceiling.
The other Exhibit Rooms are distinctly different in their character, reflecting their function as both display and storage. The use of Cherry wood and a consistently high level of detail for the cabinetry work unites these Galleries.
