GLOVER BUILDING LOBBY
The Riggs National Bank
The interior lobby of the Glover Building, 808 17th street, Washington D.C. had a luminous ceiling with fluorescent lighting, terrazzo floors, marble walls, and stainless steel doors, all of which were lacking any pattern or ornamentation. After renovation, the lobby was transformed into a beautiful and elegant welcome to the corporate banking offices above. The lobby design is influenced by the historic precedent of the monumental work of the Federal Triangle, the National Gallery of Art, and the National Archives Building.
The walls of the lobby and the elevator surrounds are modeled in hand carved French limestone and set with a matching soft lime mortar. The columns are of Italian Calacata Vagli Rosato marble with white Carrara marble bases and hand crafted plaster Ionic capitals. Floors are granite and the doors are bronze and mirror. The reception desk, which is detailed in two types of marble, conceals the security monitors and computer equipment. The plaster ceiling ornament creates a classic oval shield that visually unites the rectangular room and emphasizes the direction of travel through the space. The custom pendant light fixtures consist of bronze surrounds with thin translucent marble bowls.
