WASHINGTON HARBOUR OFFICE
The Riggs National Bank
The Washington Harbour Office is located in the Washington Harbour commercial complex in Georgetown. It is designed in a traditional late 18th century English classical style. The trapezoidal public space is light and open, with a generous ceiling height and large windows.
The Interior is subtly divided into discrete operational areas by the rhythm of the architectural elements of column, pilaster and ceiling panels. The entrance doors to the banking hall and to the safe deposit area flank the central bay of tellers’ windows and enrich the long interior wall opposite the windows. The large faux marble finish columns along the interior wall are painted with trompe l’oeil light and shadow, a traditional and sophisticated painting device used to reinforce the impression of sunlight flooding the hall from the long window wall.
The interior design materials, textures, colors and furnishings, were meticulously selected and executed to complement the rhythm and patterns of the larger architectural order. The plan of the office is deceptively simple, all non-public functions being well placed along the interior demising wall, allowing the spacious public hall to dominate the plan.
